Background: Ring Scanners not able to scan
Lightning Source creates small runs of published books of all kinds. The unique thing about Lightning Source is that the books are created electronically without the traditional use of plates. So you could create one book if needed. There are no minimums.
Since they can create one book at a time, there is a good deal of handwork in creating the hard or soft book cover. When the books are ready to ship, they are placed by hand on a tote. The operator needs both sets of hands to pick up the books and place them in the tote. They also need to scan the barcode on the book jacket for tracking purposes.
Issue: Bad Cable equals no scan
Lightning Source worked with a company that offers a ring scanner that is tied to a Bluetooth radio and the work station PC. This was an exceptional idea except for the problems with the cable on the scanner. It would always tend to brake at the connectors. After a great deal of research, it was discovered it was the heat & humidity in the warehouse. The cable connection went limp and caused the cable connection to break. BRS was called to help solve the problem by finding a way to make the 50 scanners in the plant work properly.
Solution: Detail Investigation
The solution was several redesigns developed by the customer with help from BRS as the liaison between the customer and the manufacture. Several redesigns of the cable were made and a final design was developed with the unique challenges of the hot and humid environment.
While there were many modifications with fits and starts, Lightning Source was able to get the performance out of the ring scanners they needed. BRS was there with the first version and helped achieve the final version. Ultimately, the designs make at Lightning Source were incorporated into the final revision designed for the newest equipment.
