How an automotive industry manufacturer cut costs and improved productivity by choosing preventive maintenance for their thermal barcode printers
Background: A personal referral leads to a long-term partnership
The relationship between BRS and Mahle began several years ago, when an employee - who had worked with BRS at his former company - recommended they call BRS for help with their thermal printers. BRS received many calls regarding repairs, parts and installations. These repairs started to become costly, and BRS saw an opportunity to help Mahle to lower expenses.
Issue: Repairs becoming too frequent and costly
Mahle has over a dozen Zebra 105sl printers in use on production lines, some with quite a few miles on them. They experienced a dilemma faced by many plant managers, production supervisors, IT managers and purchasing agents – the aging printers are crucial to continuing production, and with only one backup printer, there is little tolerance for breakdowns. If two printers were to break down at once, it would stop production on one of the lines for days, not just hours.
Meanwhile, though BRS was able to fix the Zebra printers and return them to production quickly, the cost of repairs were piling up. BRS suggested that Mahle consider a plan for Preventive Maintenance.
Solution: Preventive Maintenance lowers expenses
With the annual PM agreement in place, Mahle has realized savings on repair, labor and parts. In calendar year 2009, Mahle will save over $1,800 compared to normal on-site repair charges. Plus, Mahle has benefited from the discounts on thermal transfer ribbons and labels that BRS offers to customers with a PM agreement.
Over the years, BRS has been very grateful to provide Mahle with ribbons and labels, thermal printers, parts and repairs. We strive to find more ways to add value for our existing customers, and would like to do the same for your company.
